McDowell Tech Photography Students Showcase Work at MACA, Now Including Documentary Films

McDowell Technical Community College announced today that the college’s photographic technology program will once again host its annual student gallery exhibit at McDowell Arts Council Association (MACA). This year’s exhibit, which runs from March 13th through the end of March, offers visitors a chance to experience a diverse range of photographic work from emerging student photographers — and for the first time ever, documentary films will also be featured.

An opening reception will take place on Thursday, March 13th from 4 to 6 p.m. at MACA, located at 50 S. Main Street in Marion. The reception provides an opportunity for the general public to meet the student photographers and filmmakers and discuss their creative work. Guests are welcome to come and go as they please during the reception window.

This year’s featured students are: Starr Allen, Brady Blanton, Daniel Laws, Zach Morgan, Pamela Mumby, Brittany Pannell, Ruth Raffield, and Cierra Robinson. Their work spans across multiple genres including family portraits, street photography, conceptual fine art, fashion, and now documentary film, offering viewers a wide variety of artistic perspectives.

“We are always proud to showcase the hard work and creativity of our photography students,” said Dr. J.W. Kelley, McDowell Tech President. “This year’s addition of documentary films is especially exciting and speaks to the expanding skill set our students are developing. We’re so grateful to MACA for their continued partnership in providing a space for our students to share their work with the community.”

About the Photography Program

This will be the second MACA exhibit under the guidance of Rose Jerome, Photography Program Coordinator, who began her role at the college last year. Jerome noted that she is especially proud of her students’ willingness to explore new creative mediums, such as documentary film, and she looks forward to introducing the students and their work to the wider community.

The McDowell Tech photography program welcomes students of all skill levels, from those interested in professional photography careers to hobbyists seeking to refine their creative and technical skills. The college offers an Associate Degree in Photographic Technology, shorter-term certificates, and open-enrollment courses for non-degree seekers.

For those interested in learning more about McDowell Tech’s photography program, Rose Jerome will be available during the reception or can be contacted directly at 652-0682. More information can also be found online at https://mcdowelltech.edu/academic-degree-programs/photographic-technology/.

Exhibit Hours

Kelley and Jerome encourage the community to stop by the MACA gallery, support these talented emerging artists, and celebrate the power of photography and film in capturing the world around us. The exhibit will remain on view through the end of March for anyone unable to attend the opening reception.

MACA hours:

Kathy and I were watching an old movie recently when the hero described his friends as “my people.” In that moment, I was reminded how powerful it is to find individuals who share your interests, values, and dreams.
