MACA To Host McDowell Tech Graphic Design Show Throughout February

McDowell Technical Community College is pleased to announce the opening of the college’s annual graphic design exhibit at McDowell Arts Council Association (MACA) on Main Street in Marion, showcasing academic and personal projects completed by fourteen students in the college’s Graphic Design program. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular business hours for the entire month of February.

An artist’s reception will take place at MACA on Thursday, February 13th from 3:30-6:00 pm. Students exhibiting art in the show will be on hand to talk about their work.

According to Dr. J.W. Kelley, President at McDowell Tech, this exhibit will be the first of two shows this spring by art students at the college. A month-long Photography exhibit will be on display later this spring, also in MACA’s gallery space.

“Our graphic design students represent the absolute best combination of technical skills combined with amazing expressions of personal creativity,” said Kelley. “We are thankful that MACA gives us this opportunity each year to showcase their talent with others.”

“The students with work in this show represent a variety of skill levels, backgrounds and ages,” said Jay Perry, Lead Instructor in the Graphic Design Program. “We have high school students and adults of all ages taking both in-person and online classes, some taking short-term classes, while others are in the first or second year of a two-year associate degree program. We even have a husband and wife, Alvis and Maggie Jackson, who are taking classes together this year.

“What they all have in common,” he said, “is a strong interest in creating visual art of one type or another. Some work with acrylic paint or watercolors, while others do pencil drawings, fully-digital art or mixed media. It is always a pleasure to showcase the breadth of their talent and the diversity of subject matter in their art.”

“These students have bright futures in art, advertising, marketing and other forms of graphic design,” said Dr. Kelley. “We hope you will join us for our artist’s reception on February 13th or stop by MACA sometime during February to check out the unique works of art our students have prepared for this show.”

Dreams Come True at McDowell Tech

The McDowell Tech commencement ceremonies are more than formal traditions—they’re powerful celebrations of dreams realized. As I handed Emilee Brooks her diploma this spring, a young man rushed the stage, knelt down, and proposed marriage. In that moment, two dreams came true—one academic, one personal—and the crowd erupted in celebration.
