Coping with Emotional Challenges After a Disaster: Support for Students

After a disaster, both children and adults can experience overwhelming emotions. It’s important to acknowledge these feelings as normal and to encourage open communication, especially with children, to help reduce anxiety. Families should also seek external support, such as counseling services and crisis hotlines, which can complement their efforts in coping with emotional challenges. By focusing on open dialogue and utilizing available resources, families can foster a sense of safety and stability during difficult times.

McDowell Cares:

Thousands of people in McDowell County affected by Hurricane Helene need help now.

Baptist on Mission, FEMA, and the American Red Cross have boots on the ground working with local efforts to provide emergency shelter, food, and supplies for thousands of evacuees and those who have lost it all. McDowell Cares is working in conjunction with community partners and state and local officials to ensure help is available where needed.
