Class of 2024 Commencement Exercises

McDowell Technical Community College held not one, but two graduation ceremonies on Friday at Nebo Crossing Church in Marion to accommodate the college’s largest graduating class ever. Approximately 325 students received a curriculum degree, diploma or certificate, 54 received continuing education certificates and 53 students received an adult high school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

This is the first year that longer term workforce and continuing education students have participated in the college’s official graduation ceremonies. Kim Effler, Director of McDowell Chamber of Commerce, was keynote speaker for the event. Emily Alfaro, the college’s Student Government President, spoke to the students about her experiences being a first-generation college student and daughter of immigrant parents. Max Dasher, a 2024 American Idol Contestant, who is a Career and College Promise Student at McDowell Tech, joined Greg Conley to provide special music for the graduates. Retiring faculty members Kelly McFarland and Rhonda Steele were recognized for their many years of service. Awards were presented to two distinguished alumni, the 2024 Teacher of the Year, and the Julie Buckner Padgett Leadership Award.
