We all love a good celebration.
Whether it’s a song on the radio, a scene from a favorite movie, or a real-life moment of achievement, we’re wired to cheer for people when they accomplish something meaningful, overcome adversity, or give selflessly in service to others.
You probably already have someone in mind who’s worthy of such a celebration.

This year, my wife Kathy and I have our own celebration in the family—our oldest son is graduating from college. Like many proud parents this season, we’ve been planning for months: ordering announcements, organizing gatherings, and looking forward to the ceremony. It’s a joyful time, filled with reflection and gratitude.
A Season of Celebration at McDowell Tech
Here at McDowell Technical Community College, we’re also in full celebration mode. This spring, we’ve honored student success in many forms:
- Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inducted students who exemplify academic excellence and leadership.
- At the Student Academic Awards Ceremony on April 21, we recognized students for outstanding achievement in specific subjects.
- Our SkillsUSA competitors received state awards for vocational and technical excellence.
And now, the stage is set for graduation.
- On Friday, May 9, students earning High School Equivalency, Adult High School diplomas, and workforce credentials will cross the stage.
- On Saturday, May 10, we’ll celebrate:
- Our Arts & Sciences college transfer students in the morning, and
- Our Applied Science graduates in career and technical education in the afternoon.
- The celebration doesn’t end in May. This summer, we’ll recognize graduates from Basic Law Enforcement, Paramedic, Nursing Assistant, and other high-impact workforce programs.
Behind each ceremony is a story of perseverance.
Stories That Define #TechTough
Take, for example, one Operations Management graduate, whose family business was devastated by Hurricane Helene. Through determination and tireless effort, she helped rebuild the business—all while completing her degree.
Or consider a Cosmetology student who broke her foot. She didn’t let that stop her. After just a month of recovery—and while also navigating storm recovery—she was back in class, focused and determined to finish what she started.
These are just two of the many #TechTough stories that define our students: their grit, grace, and growth are why we celebrate.
