Board Celebrates Kaylor’s 90th Birthday

The Board of Trustees at McDowell Technical Community College had a special surprise for one of their own at Thursday night’s monthly board meeting.

Joe Kaylor

Mr. Joe Kaylor turned 90 years old on January 30th, so board members surprised him with a special cake and County Commission Chairman David Walker, also a member of the trustee board, led the group in singing “Happy Birthday” as the meeting opened. Dr. John Gossett, MTCC President, and Darren Waugh, Board Chair, thanked Kaylor for his many years of service to the college and its students.

True to his playful nature, Mr. Kaylor, who was one of the first to arrive at the meeting, saw the cake and turned the “9” upside down to suggest he was thirty years younger and joked about it at the meeting. Mr. Kaylor is one of the college’s longest-serving board of trustee members and once served as Chairman of the Board. He was also a longtime member of the McDowell County School Board and served on the board of the NC Department of Transportation for several years, among his many other civic activities.

As I handed Emilee Brooks her diploma this spring, a young man rushed the stage, knelt down, and proposed marriage. In that moment, two dreams came true—one academic, one personal—and the crowd erupted in celebration.
