Have a young scientist itching to stretch their science muscles this summer?

Mad Science STEM Camp is for them!

McDowell Tech is offering a four-day camp jam-packed with fun and learning! Campers will be fully engaged in projects that teach practical and amazing science lessons. Explore a universe of chemical reactions, harness the sun’s energy to create tasty treats, unleash the awesomeness of the scientific method, and so much more.

Who: Students going into 8th grade this fall.

When: Students will participate in one, four-day camp session
(Monday-Thursday)
Where: McDowell Technical Community College

Cost: FREE! Snacks are included; families must send children with a sack lunch.

Transportation: Not provided. Families must get children to and from
McDowell Tech daily.

Registration Deadline: 5 PM on Wed, June 29, 2024

Campers will engage with one of these themes
each of the four days:

Power
explore alternative energy sources

Activities include:

  • making solar-powered ovens to cook s’mores
  • making human batteries
  • exposing the hidden energy of UV light
  • building functioning wind turbines.

Spies
dive into the secret world of spies

Activities include

  • code-making and code-breaking (cryptography)
  • identifying and using invisible inks
  • making camouflage
  • using with biometrics to identify spies.

Creatures
immerse in the world of anatomy and physiology to understand what it takes to keep a creature alive

Activities include

  • reverse engineering a cardiovascular system
  • building a model lung to understand respiration
  • discovering the secrets of the eye and vision
  • engineering alternative ways to close a bone fracture.

Inventions
spend the day tinkering!

Activities include

  • building a Rube Goldberg Machine
  • making and blasting off rockets
  • free maker-space time.

Potions

discover chemical reactions, the scientific method, and safety in the laboratory

Activities use chemistry to:

  • make lava lamps and Alka-Seltzer-like tablets to fuel them
  • identify unknown white powders
  • decorate backpacks/t-shirts and make colored chalk by chromatography.
