Growth and Progress Highlight Reports to MTCC Board of Trustees

When the McDowell Technical Community College Board of Trustees met in regular session on August 8th to conduct monthly business for the college, Vice-Presidents Valerie Brown and Stacy Buff presented trustees with a very positive year-end outcomes and progress report for the college’s Vision 2025 project. Vision 2025 contains specific goals set by the college to increase access, achievement and other factors related to student success and workforce development (https://mcdowelltech.edu/vision25).

Thanks to generous donations by the Rotary Club of Marion and friends of Rotary, scholarship giving to the McDowell Technical Community College Foundation got a big shot in the arm last week just as the college began welcoming students back to campus for the 2024 academic year. In recognition of their gifts, the college welcomed Rotarians and other friends to campus last Thursday to dedicate a multipurpose training room in the Dogwood Building in their honor.

McDowell Tech to Host “Touch-A-Truck” for Health Coalition’s Summer THRIVE Finale!

The McDowell County Health Coalition will wrap up it’s family-friendly outdoor series, Summer THRIVE, on Saturday, August 17th with a special “Touch-A-Truck” event hosted by McDowell Tech in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot on Main Street in Marion. The Summer THRIVE Program began in June with weekly events at the Marion Community Park every Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon. The Touch-A-Truck grand finale will also be from 10 am to noon, but in the bank parking lot.

Three Trustees Sworn in to Serve McDowell Technical Community College

District Court Judge Corey MacKinnon of Marion, NC, swore in two new members and one returning member to the McDowell Technical Community College Board of Trustees at the group’s latest meeting held on August 7th. Victoria Abernathy, David Patneaude and returning member Chad Marsh will each serve four-year terms on the board. Judge MacKinnon is also a member of the trustee board.

Route 70 Cruisers Continue Incredible Record of Giving to MTCC and Others

The Route 70 Cruisers, a local nonprofit car club based in Old Fort NC recently donated $1,500 to MTCC through the McDowell Technical Community College Foundation to support student scholarships in two different academic programs at the college—Automotive Systems Technology and Basic Law Enforcement Training.

“FAFSA Fiesta” to Help Students Apply for Financial Aid

McDowell Technical Community College, along with the College Foundation of North Carolina and Radio La Grande, will hold a special “FAFSA Fiesta” on the McDowell Tech campus next Tuesday, July 30th to help current and prospective students complete admission and financial aid applications for the upcoming school year, especially the new Next NC Scholarship program which guarantees eligible students attending a NC community college a minimum of $3,000 in federal and state financial aid, more than enough to cover tuition and fees for an academic year. The event is free and open to the public.

W. Harold Smith Charitable Trust Creates MTCC Endowed Scholarship

The William Harold Smith Charitable Trust, a local charity established by the late Harold Smith, has created a new endowed scholarship at McDowell Technical Community College with a gift of $50,000 to the McDowell Technical Community College Foundation. These funds will be matched with proceeds from a Title III grant provided by the U.S. Department of Education, bringing the initial endowment of the William Harold Smith Memorial Endowed Scholarship to $100,000.

Celebrating a Life Well-Lived

In his 83 years of life, Dr. Robert M. Boggs took on several unique roles—public school superintendent, community college president, horseman, teacher, civic leader and actor, among others—but none were more cherished to him than husband, father, coach, mentor and friend. To many, he was nothing short of a legend, and most would say that it was a role that fit him to a tee.
