McDowell Tech Trustees Sworn in For New Terms

Judge Ellen Shelley of Marion, NC had the unusual privilege of swearing in one of her judicial colleagues, Judge Corey MacKinnon, as the newest member of the McDowell Technical Community College Board of Trustees prior to the beginning of the board’s September meeting.

MacKinnon will serve a four-year term on the board following his appointment by the McDowell County Board of Commissioners. Shelley and MacKinnon each serve McDowell and Rutherford Counties as District Court Judges in North Carolina Judicial District 29A.

Shelley also swore in returning members Don Ramsey and Robert Ayers to new four-year terms on the board. Ayers was reappointed by the McDowell County Board of Education, while Ramsey was reappointed by the NC Governor’s Office.

The MTCC Board of Trustees is comprised of twelve members serving four-year terms, with one appointment made each year by the McDowell County Commissioners, the McDowell County Board of Education and the NC Governor’s Office. Appointments are non-partisan and members serve on the board without pay.

“We appreciate Judge Shelley for coming to the college to swear in these board members, and especially appreciate Mr. Ramsey, Mr. Ayers and Judge MacKinnon for their willingness to serve the college and our students over the next four years,” said Ryan Garrison, MTCC Interim President. “We will continue to look to them to guide our mission and vision as we seek to achieve our local and regional workforce development goals. More importantly, it is this group of individuals that will select and submit the name of the college’s next president to be approved by the NC State Board of Community Colleges. Their role and presence at this critical juncture cannot be overstated.”
