At McDowell Technical Community College, the phrase “Learning for Life” means far more than helping students begin or continue their education at any stage of life. It also reflects the college’s commitment to building a culture where faculty and staff continually sharpen their skills, grow professionally, and remain lifelong learners.

That commitment is being lived out daily across campus. Over the past several months, eight McDowell Tech employees have completed new academic degrees ranging from associate and bachelor’s degrees to master’s and doctoral programs. Each did so while continuing to serve students and the community.

“These accomplishments speak volumes about who we are as a college,” said Dr. Valerie Dobson, Vice President of Academics and Student Services and Chief Academic Officer, who herself recently earned a Doctor of Education in Adult and Community College Leadership from North Carolina State University. “Our culture truly values curiosity, professional growth, and continual improvement, not just for students, but for everyone who works here.”

Those completing new degrees include:

·         Dr. Valerie Dobson – Doctor of Education, NC State University

·         Dr. Brandon Hensley, Dean of Career and Technical Education – PhD in Education, Workforce and Organizational Development, Old Dominion University

·         Hanna Golding, Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs – Master’s Degree in Leadership in Higher Education, Appalachian State University

·         Kimberly Crawley, Simulation Coordinator – Master’s Degree in Nursing Education, Western Carolina University

·         Randy Edwards, Paramedic & EMT Instructor – Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Care, Western Carolina University

·         Rachel Ray, Curriculum and Instructional Support Specialist – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Management), Appalachian State University; Magna Cum Laude

·         Julianna Juarez Baez, Child Development Center, NC Pre-K Teacher Assistant – Bachelor’s Degree in Birth–Kindergarten, Western Carolina University

·         Brooke Johnson, Cosmetology Instructor – Associate in Science (College Transfer), McDowell Technical Community College

For many of these graduates, the journey was both personal and professional.

“I pursued my degree to strengthen my skills as an educator and better prepare future EMS providers,” said Randy Edwards, Paramedic & EMT Instructor. “Staying current in evidence-based practice allows me to support students while improving the quality of care in our communities.”

Simulation Coordinator Kimberly Crawley said earning her degree was especially meaningful. “I completed my Master’s in Nursing Education while my husband completed his Master’s in Nurse Leadership. Supporting one another throughout the past two years made the experience incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful to continue applying what I’ve learned to simulation-based student training at McDowell Tech.”

Rachel Ray, Curriculum and Instructional Support Specialist, added, “Returning to school reminded me that growth doesn’t stop when you graduate. I’m proud to bring that mindset into my work supporting students and faculty every day.”

And Dr. Brandon Hensley noted that his doctoral work deepened his commitment to workforce education. “Our role is to prepare students to thrive in meaningful careers. Continuing my own education has strengthened my ability to help shape programs that meet both student and industry needs.”

“Learning for Life”—For Students and Employees Alike

McDowell Tech President Dr. J.W. Kelley said the accomplishments of faculty and staff help model the very values the college hopes to inspire in students.

“When our employees continue their education, whether through a short-term credential or a doctoral program, they demonstrate what ‘Learning for Life’ is all about,” Kelley said. “Their commitment to excellence strengthens our classrooms, lifts our community, and reminds students that education truly opens doors at every stage of life.”
