Letter To the Community

A personal message from MTCC President Dr. James "JW" Kelley

Dear Friends,

Welcome to McDowell Technical Community College. At McDowell Tech, you are right where you belong. As Trekkers we know that learning, like life, is an adventure filled with growth, challenges, and new horizons.

Our students are thriving: enrollment is up, workforce credentials have increased, and licensure pass rates remain outstanding. More importantly, nearly every student tells us they feel supported here. That’s what it means to be a Trekker—never walking alone.

From healthcare and public safety to advanced manufacturing and the outdoor economy, McDowell Tech is preparing the people who keep our community moving forward. Guided by our partners—employers, schools, nonprofits, and local leaders—we design programs that meet today’s labor market demands and anticipate tomorrow’s opportunities.

Our campus is growing, too. In 2027, we’ll break ground on a new Health Sciences & Public Safety Building, expanding space for nurses, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement, and other essential professionals. It’s just one milestone in the longer trek toward innovative workforce development.

To our community partners and supporters: thank you for walking this path with us. Every student who earns a credential or degree does so because of your participation in our mission.

At McDowell Tech, we are proud to be Trekkers. We learn, grow, and dream together.

Sincerely,

James “JW” Kelley
