District Court Judge Ellen Shelley of Marion, NC, administered the oath of office to two new and three returning members of the McDowell Technical Community College Board of Trustees at the trustees first meeting of the new academic year on August 15th.
New appointee Garland Norton and returning member Gary Stroud will each serve one-year terms, filling the unexpired seats of Nancy Hunter and Susan English, who stepped down during the last fiscal year. New appointee Darren Waugh and returning members William Kehler and Kay Medford will each serve four-year terms.
Norton, a retired pharmacist and business owner from Old Fort, NC, brings both professional expertise and local perspective to the board. Waugh, Finance Director for Community Action Opportunities in Asheville, previously served on the MTCC Board of Trustees, including several years as board chair.
Stroud, a retired business owner, also serves on the Executive Board of the NC Association of Community College Trustees. Medford is a retired school principal, while Kehler is Director of McDowell County Emergency Services.

Returning board member William Kehler was appointed to a new term by the McDowell County Board of County Commissioners. All other new and returning trustees were appointed by the NC General Assembly.
The MTCC Board of Trustees consists of twelve members, each serving a four-year term. Appointments are non-partisan and trustees serve without compensation.
“We’re thankful for each of our new and returning trustees and their willingness to serve McDowell Tech,” said Dr. J.W. Kelley, President of McDowell Technical Community College. “Their time, insight, and dedication help guide the college in its mission to enrich the community through student-centered, affordable, and high-quality learning that supports workforce development. I’m personally grateful for their leadership and service.”
