Graduation Requirements & Student Responsibilities

Each student is responsible for understanding and fulfilling the graduation requirements for their specific program of study, including maintaining the minimum required grade point average.

While success coaches and faculty advisors are available to provide guidance, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to ensure all graduation requirements are met.

Minimum Graduation Requirements:

  • Meet proficiency standards in English, math, and reading.
  • Complete all required courses as outlined in the curriculum.
  • Maintain an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher, with passing grades in all courses.
  • Resolve any failed courses or incomplete grades before being eligible for graduation.

Graduation applications must be submitted through your Self-Service portal before completing your course requirements. See the video above for help!

Additionally, students should schedule a preliminary record check with an academic advisor one semester before they expect to complete their graduation requirements.

Graduation vs. Conferring Degrees

  • McDowell Tech confers degrees three times a year: December (Fall), May (Spring), and August (Summer). Degrees will only be conferred once a student applies to graduate.
  • The graduation ceremony is in May.  It is optional for all students. If you are taking summer classes and want to participate, as long as you are within 10 hours or one semester of completing your degree, you may participate.

Summer Graduates:
