Route 70 Cruisers Continue Incredible Record of Giving to MTCC and Others

The Route 70 Cruisers, a local nonprofit car club based in Old Fort NC recently donated $1,500 to MTCC through the McDowell Technical Community College Foundation to support student scholarships in two different academic programs at the college—Automotive Systems Technology and Basic Law Enforcement Training.

Their history of giving in McDowell County, however, extends far beyond the scholarships they have provided to needy students at McDowell Tech over those 12 years. The Route 70 Cruisers is much more than a group for classic car enthusiasts. They are one of the most hardworking charities in McDowell County, conducting fundraisers throughout the year to support a variety of other groups, including the American Legion, Foothills Food Hub, Freedom Life Ministries, McDowell County Department of Social Services, McDowell Missions, McDowell Pregnancy Center and others.

Through a variety of fundraisers, car shows and raffles, the group has been able to donate a total of  $94,576.31 to these community service organizations from their inception in 2009 through mid-June of this year.

“The Route 70 Cruisers have consistently and faithfully supported the college and students for many years,” said Dr. J.W. Kelley, who became President at McDowell Tech on July 1st. “It is clear that they have a heart for service for the people of McDowell County. Although our instructors and my predecessor, Interim President Ryan Garrison, were responsible for coordinating this year’s donation, I look forward to cultivating friendships with members of club.”

The next car show for the Route 70 Cruisers will be held on August 31 from 9 am to 2 pm at Camping World of Marion (348 Resistoflex Rd). Good food, good music, cool cars and door prizes will be the order of the day. To donate money or door prizes to the club and the causes they support, contact Phillip Poe or Janet Spake, co-chairs of the organization at 281-798-4805 or 828-371-9563.

“Again, we are grateful to the Route 70 Cruisers Car Club for their ongoing support,” said Dr. Kelley. “Their donations promote student success, allowing them to Learn, Grow and Dream. Thank you, Cruisers!”
