Childress and Lawing Receive SECU Foundation Scholarships

The SECU Foundation, a non-profit foundation chartered by the Board of Directors of the North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union, recently awarded “People Helping People Scholarships” to MTCC students Isaac Lawing (l) and Jocelyn Childres (r) to cover the cost of tuition, books and other educational expenses at the college. Each of the scholarships are valued at $5,000 over the course of two years. There are a number of criteria that students have to meet to be considered for the People Helping People program, including “demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement.”

Childres is a business administration student who hopes to attend Western Carolina University following graduation from McDowell Technical Community College. She is considering a career as a business teacher upon graduation from Western.

Lawing is an associate of arts major who plans to attend North Carolina State University following graduation from McDowell Technical Community College. He aspires to be a lawyer in the future.

The SECU Foundation  “promotes local and community development by primarily funding high impact projects in the areas of housing, education, healthcare and human services” across North Carolina and is funded by monthly maintenance fees paid by Credit Union members.

“We appreciate the State Employees’ Credit Union and the SECU Foundation for their continuing efforts to promote education and leadership among students at McDowell Tech and other community colleges across the state,” said Dr. Brian S. Merritt, MTCC President. “Congratulations to Jocelyn and Isaac on their awards and best wishes to them in their future studies.”
