Professional Practice Experience (Clinical) Requirements

What you need to know before you step into a clinical site.

Required by Clinical Agencies

Health and background requirements are controlled by clinical agencies. Applicants must be cleared several weeks prior to attending clinical. Many requirements must be completed before registration or program admission; others renew after admission. Agencies may require background and drug screening at any time. Additional checks (criminal, drug, credit, and/or proof of U.S. citizenship) may be required prior to or during the clinical portion. All related expenses are the student’s responsibility. Depending on results, a clinical facility may deny placement. Students unable to complete the clinical portion cannot graduate.

  • Seeking a new clinical site: student effort/input is required. Sites must be approved by MTCC and a formal contract signed by the site administrator or PPE preceptor before assignment.
  • Students currently working in healthcare typically may not fulfill PPE in the same department where employed; PPE is expected to occur during normal business hours (Mon–Fri).
  • For students near MTCC, PPE is scheduled at sites within a 40–60 mile commute.
  • Professional dress & conduct at PPE sites (summary):
    • Students cover their own transportation/parking costs; car pools are student-managed.
    • Current/previous employees generally won’t be assigned to their own facility for primary PPE.
    • Attire should be neat and professional (e.g., tailored slacks; skirts that cover mid-knee). No jeans/shorts/halters/graphic tees.
    • Footwear: clean, professional shoes; avoid athletic shoes, boots, clog-type shoes, or excessively high heels.
    • No visible tattoos or non-ear piercings; limit earrings. Maintain professional grooming; neutral nail color; neatly trimmed facial hair; no unnatural hair color.
    • Wear the MTCC photo ID identifying you as an HIT student while on site.
    • Park only in student-designated areas; any fees are the student’s responsibility.
